Introducing “The Gentle Advantage” Book Initiative

Introduction

“We all have a story.”

If we’re fortunate to live long enough and attentive to reflect, our experiences become among the greatest gifts we can offer the world. Over time, those moments of joy, challenge, adversity, and connection shape who we become, how we relate with others, and how we choose to show up in the world.

As I write this, I’m 66 years old and feel immense gratitude for the path I’ve walked: not because it was always easy, but because it taught me the value of presence, perspective, and persistence. I didn’t choose many of the trials that came into my life, mainly as a parent navigating my son’s five-time battle with childhood cancer, yet I have grown through them. What emerged is a belief that now shapes every area of my life:

A gentle lifestyle is kindness. People need people. We can grow stronger through adversity.

So, why this book? And why now?

In 2020, just months into the global pandemic, my wife Terri and I began writing regularly. It became a daily ritual, then a passion, and eventually, a gateway to discovering what mattered most. Terri’s memoir, The Focused Fight: A Childhood Cancer Journey: From Mayhem to Miracles, tells our family’s story of resilience and faith. My writing journey started with my memoir, Living Life…Off the Track and evolved into three additional unpublished memoirs:

  • Forever Changed, about our daughter Olivia’s soccer journey and the joy it brought our family
  • “Million Dollar Al” and Beyond, a tribute to my older brother, Alex
  • Double Vision, chronicling life with my twin brother Don

Through these reflections, I uncovered recurring themes: gratitude, resilience, community, and the power of kindness in small moments. I also realized that writing became a form of healing, growth, and purpose. That’s how The Gentle Advantage was born.

This book is a hybrid project—part memoir, part personal development guide, and part motivational message for anyone seeking a deeper connection to their life’s purpose. The structure of the book follows a natural arc:

  • Memoir reflections that share my life history and reveal how adversity shaped me
  • People need people – my perspective shaped through life experiences and celebration of the kindness and compassion that surrounds me
  • Personal development lessons grounded in values like humility, discipline, and compassion
  • A call to service, encouraging you to use your own experiences to help others

It’s built on a simple guiding principle I call my Life Razor:

Choose growth, gratitude, generosity, and guidance—always.

In crafting this book, I have embraced the use of generative AI (ChatGPT and Claude) as collaborative writing partners. The thoughts, experiences, and emotions are entirely my own; the technology has helped me organize, articulate, and refine my voice with greater clarity. It’s a reflection of a broader theme in my life: to remain curious, adopt new tools, and never stop learning.

“We rise by lifting others.” – Robert Ingersoll

This is not a book of prescriptions. It’s a book of perspectives. I hope that by sharing my story, its beauty, trials, and traumas, you’ll feel inspired to reflect on your story and consider:

“How can I use my life to help someone else?” Thank you for picking up The Gentle Advantage. Let’s begin.
